Knights of Columbus St. Raphael’s Council 9880
Meeting Minutes December 12, 2006
- Meeting called to order at 7:30 PM - Council Officers role call
- Reading of the Minutes. Motion to accept the business meeting minutes published in the KnightLife was made and passed.
Chancellor's Report: - Planning a free throw contest
Grand Knight’s Report: - The Council liability insurance certificate has arrived from Supreme. Fin. Sec. will keep original and a copy is given to the church.
Treasurer’s Report: - Joe Foley, filling in for Ed Cody reported that they are getting the records squared away. The total for the 3 accounts belonging to the council is now correct.
Financial Secretary’s Report: - Joe Foley, acting Fin. Sec. (Clayton Rogers resigned last month) reported that there are 152 registered members. Of these 24 are no longer living in the area or have left St. Raphael church. or are deceased. Another 60 have not paid dues (5 months behind). Ed Cody and Joe will continue to investigate to get the true number of active Knights. Joe thinks it will wind up around 120.
- Joe also reports that KofC 9880 is not a tax exempt organization so we must pay tax on all purchases. However, St Raphael Catholic Church is exempt. If the church buys supplies for our fund raising events and we reimburse the church, taxes can be refunded. Joe is working out the mechanics.
Trustees’ Report: - 2nd Yr Trustee Mark Parrish reported that the newsletter KnightLife would be sent on paper to all council members starting in December. The council feels that not enough Knights were taking the time to print and read the electronic version on the web site. The web site will still post the latest newsletter and will maintain an archive of past issues as well as past council minutes.
Service Programs: - Family: Tom Smith reported that the Family Advent Breakfast with Santa, held last Saturday was a great success (photos are posted at www.kofc9880.org). There were 3 shifts and as many as a dozen Knights involved in serving about 300 breakfasts. This was an event organized by the Home School Association and was a great community win for the Knights.
- Community: Tom Smith reports that the Christmas Basket event is in full swing. Many food donations were collected this weekend and the packaging and distribution will occur next weekend (Dec 17). There 58 families identified as recipients of the food: 25 from God & Neighbor, 25 from Hispanic Ministry, and 8 from Proj. Gabriel. Signup for 3 shifts and volunteers to bring the collected food from the shed to Raphael Hall was organized for Sunday morning starting after the 7:45 mass. Bread is to be delivered on Friday. The supply of frozen turkeys was 25 short, so 5 individuals volunteered to bring 5 turkeys each on Sunday.
Bill Hast reported that 6 Knights helped with Capital Towers. All Knights are welcome to bring their kids to help out. The next date is January 67.
Frank Castillo reported (via Tom Smith) that 32 units of blood were collected during the last Knights sponsored Red Cross blood drive. They would like to schedule the next time for April. There may be a conflict with the pancake breakfast.
- Church: "Keep Christ in Christmas" tree was put up. A 25ft flag poll is needed for more stability. John Gunther will look into this.
Unfinished Business: - John Gunther suggested that the shrimp/fish dinners should be organized by now to make sure everything is in place. GK Jim Lueck told the council that Mike Janus would be spearheading the 7-week event. Several Knights learned how to fry the fish last year and will help keep the food coming.
New Business: - Tom Smith reported that Fr. Price Council Knights were selling fruit after masses on Sunday without permission. He reminded everyone that all events and activities must be approved by the church provost Lou Pappalardo.
- Starting with the pancake breakfast in January, the Knights will only serve food after the 7:45 and 9:30 masses. It was determined by the pancake crew that most people attending the 11:30 mass did not want breakfast after mass. Also, this will mean that the crew can stop cooking and get the kitchen cleaned by noon. The Knights are now scheduled to cool pancakes on the 3rd Sunday of each month. New, larger grills (industrial rather than home) need to be purchased before the next breakfast (Jan 17). John Gunther suggested that the priests be invited to this and all events. Jim Lueck suggested that we get assistance from groups like the Boy Scouts to help with the breakfasts or other events. The Boy Scouts could serve and clean up, but would need some kind of reimbursement.
- John Gunther announced that the council is looking for new members to fill the 1st and 2nd degree teams.
- John Gunther will soon start working on a closet for the Knights in the shed at the back of the parking lot. He is now working on the specifications and would like input for design and furnishings.
Good of the Order: Please remember in your prayers the following: - John Harrod: brother's mother inlaw - Jim Cody: John Gunther walking straight, Tom Smith bad back - Gilbert Hendricks: mother eye surgery - Tom Smith: Jack Somers, now more mobile
